About ATREE's Agasthyamalai Community Conservation Centreion Centre :
Agasthyamalai Community Conservation Centre, a 4.5 acres campus established in the foothills of the Agasthyamalai in 2001. The overall goal was to understand how ecosystems respond to natural and anthropogenic changes and what governing mechanisms and management regimes exist in the region to address specific biodiversity conservation issues. It enables interaction with diverse groups of local stakeholders, imbibe community knowledge and build capacity and leadership to address conservation issues in and around the iconic Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR). The geographical focus of ACCC is the eastern slopes of the Agasthyamalai Hill range which is a source for many rivers that seamlessly merge to form the perennial river Tamiraparani which straddles the three districts of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi in southern Tamil Nadu. River Tamiraparani is the lifeline that traverses through the parched and arid landscape (12,000 km2) sustaining extensive paddy and banana agriculture, harbouring important social, cultural and biodiversity landmarks.
