About Waste Warriors:
Waste Warriors is a 12-year-old non-profit organisation working to set up systems for tackling waste mismanagement in the Indian Himalayan Region. We drive behaviour change in communities, set up community-owned collection and transportation systems, deploy waste processing infrastructure, and partner with end recyclers for appropriate waste processing. We work closely with local government agencies to unlock funds, pass by-laws, and build local-level ownership. This work has led Waste Warriors to win the Keeling Curve Prize 2023 - awarded by The Global Warming Mitigation Project (USA) to the top 10 solutions globally working to mitigate GHG emissions. The organisation follows a Gandhian philosophy that technology should be demystified, and its control decentralized and put into the hands of the rural poor; that there is a difference between literacy and education; that marginalized women should be given equal opportunities to learn; and that we should attempt to conserve our local knowledge.
